Franz Keller 2017 Pinot Noir (Spätburgunder) Baden-Kaiserstuhl, Germany
German Pinot Noir, known there as Spätburgunder, is criminally under-appreciated. This wine is from the German region Kaiserstuhl, which lies in the wine region of Baden. The producer of this wine is the authentic winery, Franz Keller. Keller is a specialist in 'Burgundersorten,' so the Pinots and Chardonnay. These wines mature in their best barrels, and all have a unique character, potential, and finesse — truly unique grand crus! Coming from the Eichberg vineyard, a plot located in the bottom half of this vineyard was planted in 1994 by Fritz Keller using only Pinot Noir clones from Burgundy. The dark volcanic soil leads to a distinctive, rather masculine Pinot Noir that is powerful and animated.
